Autonumbering figures and tables

Hello folks,
Please, is it possible to auto-number figures and tables in a document? I've discovered the <figure> </figure> as well as the <figcaption> </figcaption> tags, which I'm guessing is partway there.
Also, thanks for \label{eq-name} and \ref{eq-name} which work so far in a [ ] math environment, autonumbering equations. I don't know if something like that would work with tables and figures.
Any and all comments will be appreciated.

Just found somethin in section 8.2 of the construction guide that didn't make sense to me at first, but I think it's almost what I'm looking for. I put the PageIndex example code into a <figcaption> </figcaption> pair. At least the chapter and senction numbers are inserted for me.

Krista H You did find the right place!

For equations, if you use the correct square brackets instead of parentheses, it will be auto-numbered for you. Take a look at The Construction Guide 2e: Advanced Editing for Equations

What you found was the PageIndex - if you use our standard Template Boxes of which the ones in Section 8.2 you found probably reference, then they will be automatically added. You can use that same PageIndex code anywhere in your document to reference those.
