Hello folks, I'm learning the ins and outs about how to best insert source code into a book. Any observations or suggestions will be appreciated. I first tried to use an ordinary table but I found that source code rows had to be split up and that in copying out formatted text, characters were inserted. Both points are major pains.
In the text editor I next tried Style >> <pre> Format. I'm coding in assembly language for the MC6801, so it appears that the text format may be the best choice. With this approach the lines in the source code are not broken up, line numbers are automatically inserted, and there is a neat feature of being able to see the original source.
Traditionally when assembly language is assembled to produce a list file, the address value for each instruction as well as the machine code are written to the left, before each line number. After the first pass underscores are written in for address references, then after the second pass the actual values are written into the blanks. There should be a such a list file attached.

So far I'm inserting into a table two Style >> <pre> Format blocks into a table, with the original source in the right block and instruction addresses with machine code to the left. having line numbers inserted in each block is not an issue.
The downsides that I see with Style >> <pre> Format is that I don't know how to adjust line spacing or line numbering and I don't know how to underscore anything.
Sincerely,
Krista
I only see a few downsides to this second approach. First off, how can characters
