Is H5P Accessible?

I have heard different views on whether H5P materials are accessible. Are they? Or if not, then when can they be used?

In general, H5P-based interactive materials are not accessible. Whether they are used as part of a textbook or in an ADAPT homework question, you should be wary of their usefulness. ADAPT has many native question types that are built to be accessible and can be used embedded in textbooks, as well.

However, since many people use H5P, we have built a guide on H5P Accessibility, including a chart that breaks down which activities in H5P are accessible.

ADAPT does have tools for creating alternate questions for any activity which can be automatically provided to students who are listed as needing alternative accessible options. While the majority of H5P activities are not yet fully accessible, accessibility has gradually improved since Desire2Learn (D2L) acquired H5P (formerly Joubel) a few years ago. D2L has been slowly enhancing the accessibility features across the H5P activity suite, although many activities still have unresolved issues. Although these efforts are beneficial to the broader community, one ongoing concern is that, as a for-profit company, D2L may not remain committed to preserving H5P’s open licensing model or providing long-term, open support for the technology. How this will ultimately unfold remains uncertain.
